Yoga Basics Workshop with Amy Rinaldi Sat, Jan 14, 2017 at 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
An interactive, introductory workshop designed for those new to yoga. This workshop provides a low-key, non-competitive space for the curious yogi to “get their feet wet” exploring some basic yoga poses. These yoga principles can form the foundation for other poses as your yoga practice evolves. Using breath and verbal cues, we will begin to feel how yoga theory, breath, and asana (physical poses), manifest in the body. This helps to create awareness in the body, a healthy relationship with our bodies, and develop the connection with the mind for overall well-being. Proper alignment tools and a nurturing environment empower the new student.

Props, including yoga mats, are available at the studio, though you may choose to bring your own. Please dress comfortably with layers that allow you to move.

Seva: The Yoga of Service with A Wider Circle and Calmaraderie with Emily Star Mon, Jan 16, 2017 at 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm
The practice of yoga often invites us to feel stronger, calmer, and more able to take on what life throws at us. When we are stable enough to care for ourselves, it's time to practice seva - the yoga of selfless service for others.

In this workshop, we'll flow together to tend to our own wellbeing through a well-rounded asana practice at Blue Heron Wellness. After the yoga class we will have a tea/snack break and then head over to A Wider Circle (9159 Brookville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910) to volunteer. We will help organize household items such as dishes, pots, pans, home goods, and furniture to families transitioning out of shelters, escaping domestic violence, or otherwise living without their basic need items. You are welcome to invite friends and family members (kids over age 5 must have a parent present if they have never volunteered at AWC before) to the "seva" portion of our event, which will begin at 3:30 - please us know how many additional people are coming by emailing joannblueheron@gmail.com.

Blue Heron teacher Emily Star has taught yoga in studios, shelters, and schools since 2011. In 2016, she started Calmaraderie to create opportunities for yogis to volunteer together.

Can't make it? Visit www.awidercircle.org to donate and learn about more ways to volunteer.

Donation of $10 (or more) goes to Wider Circle.

Yin Yoga Training: Joints, Fascia & Meridians - Part Two Yin Yoga utilizes muscularly relaxed poses on the floor that are held for several minutes in order to stimulate fascia, ligaments, and joint capsules. Through modest traction and compression, one trains the joint tissues and works against contracture that causes degeneration, pain, and decreased range of motion.

Part 2 - Sunday January 22nd and Saturday January 28thPart 2 of the training can be taken independently from Part 1. The first Yin Training weekend emphasized physical structure and comparative anatomy for modifications in Yin Yoga. This second part of the training will focus more on the theory and science of utilizing Yin Yoga to stimulate fascia as a form of self-acupressure/acu-tension along energetic lines based on 5 element meridian theory. The 12 major organs and their meridians will be explored alongside their physical and psychological associations. Participants will dive more deeply into how Yin Yoga is uniquely therapeutic for structural support, emotional release, and psychological well-being through the subtle stimulus of soft tissue.

Yoga Alliance certified teachers can receive a certificate on completion for twenty five (25) Continuing Education (CEU) hours.
Training cost: $275 for part two.

Ever wonder why or how Yoga came about? Why was it important in the ancient world and why is it so important in our world today? This background will help yogis of today to answer our own questions: How does your yoga practice affect your life? How do you know if you are making progress in yoga? Why does doing a yoga pose change your life?

QiGong, Deep Relaxation and Meditation with Peter Mosher Sun, Jan 29, 2017 at 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
We will engage in Qigong instruction and practice, deep relaxation, and mindfulness meditation with singing bowls and meditative chanting. The Qigong practice flows naturally into deep relaxation and this establishes the conditions for meditation to be most effective by slowing down and opening the body, mind and spirit for nurturing and healing.

Qigong instruction draws from ancient traditional Chinese health practices, its relationship to acupuncture, and to Indian yogic practices. We will explore how our energy/prana/chi flows through our bodies, how it becomes blocked, how we can remove blocks and move toward optimum health. Qigong practice is done using slow movements coordinated with the breath.

Following Qigong practice, you will be guided into deep relaxation. From this relaxed physical and mental state we will move into a period of guided meditation maintaining mindfulness of our energy as it flows through our entire being enhancing mental, emotional, and spiritual clarity and well being. We will close with a healing meditation.
