I think Blue Heron is a wonderful place. The yoga teachers are enthusiastic and kind. It’s amazing how much I’ve learned in the last year.” — Nancy K.
Blue Heron Wellness’ program is for everyone who wants to study and explore the richness of yoga for awakening awareness, deepening inner and outer connections, creating presence, feeling good and enjoying life. Students will learn to better integrate the key lessons and knowledge of yoga to enrich their daily lives, unlocking the greater potential of body, mind and spirit.
Our Deeper Study of Yoga Program is a six-month adventure into the depths of yoga teachings and techniques. Students will improve and advance their practice and their understanding of yoga as a tool for well-being. The program is also offered as individual weekend workshops. The program will cover:
Jan. 5-6 - The Foundations of Yoga – In addition to our deeper study of asana, meditation and pranayama, the yogic concepts of foundation, intention, balanced action, spanda and attitude will be explored. Particular emphasis will be given to the foundations of meditation and the “natural breath”.
Feb. 2-3 – To Be A Student (Adhikara) – In addition to our deeper study of asana, meditation and pranayama, topics covered will include what it means to be a yoga student, alignment, attitude, the five elements of nature, the voice of the breath and tantric yoga. Asana practice will focus on the principles of the legs.
March 9-10 – Living Your Yoga – In addition to our deeper study of asana, meditation and pranayama, topics explored will include the yamas and niyamas, bhakti, karma and jnana yoga and the yogic concepts of dharma (universal truth) and swatantrya (free will). Asana practice will focus on easeful backbends.
April 13-14 – The Flow and Transformation of Energy – In addition to our deeper study of asana, meditation and pranayama – topics explored will include the chakras and the energy body, the story of AUM, the koshas, mantra and meditation. Practice will focus on twists and inversions and breathwork on nadi shodana (alternate nostril breathing).
May 11-12 - Yoga History: Honoring the Path and Moving Forward – In addition to our deeper study of asana, meditation and pranayama, this course will explore the every day relevance of the seminal yoga texts – Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita. Practice will focus on the back body and breathwork on viloma pranayama.
June 15-16 – Creating Community and Connections – In addition to our deeper study of asana, meditation and pranayama, the final course will focus on creating a home practice. The many faces and functional aspects of Hindu deities Shiva and Shakti will be discussed as well as the importance of murties (icons) such as Hanuman and Ganesha.
Each weekend Blue Heron’s program will include an intensive practice, guided meditation, interactive lectures and study, in-class journaling, pranayama instruction and focused self-study. Students will learn more about what yoga means and how to build a better personal practice. Blue Heron’s program will immerse you in the wisdom of yoga. The Deeper Study of Yoga is an excellent precursor to our Yoga Teacher Training Program.
Blue Heron’s Deeper Study of Yoga Program is designed to be life-friendly and affordable. Classes meet Saturday and Sunday afternoons; one weekend per month for six months.
